In Loving Memory of John Donald Maxwell (1932–2025)
A Legacy Built on Family, Hard Work and Community
It is with deep sadness that the Maxwell family announces the passing of John Donald Maxwell – known to many simply as Don – who has died peacefully aged 93, surrounded by his loved ones.
Don was the son of Jack and Violet Maxwell, founders of Maxwells in 1932. In 1957, he took over the family business and transformed it from a single DIY shop into one of the North East’s most recognisable and trusted retail names. Under his leadership, Maxwells expanded across the region, from Sunderland to South Shields, Jarrow to Peterlee, Ashington to Barnard Castle, always staying true to its founding values of quality, service and community.
To many, Don was more than a businessman, he was a kind and familiar face, a steady hand, and a proud local figure who never forgot his roots. He introduced model and toy departments that became childhood landmarks for generations, and he led the business with quiet strength and a deeply personal sense of care for staff and customers alike.
Don’s passion for the business was matched only by his love for his family. In the late 1970s, three of his sons joined him in the company, two of whom remain at the helm today. For Don, Maxwells was never just a company; it was a family effort, built with heart and hard work.
His legacy lives on not only in the stores that still serve communities across the North East, but in the values he instilled: loyalty, humility, and dedication. Don will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure to know him.
The Maxwell family would like to thank friends, colleagues, and customers for their kind messages and support. Funeral details will be shared privately in due course.
He will be greatly missed – but never forgotten.
